Oh my goodness how glorious is this spring sunshine?! With just one week to go until our big day (eek how did the time fly past so quickly?) I’m keeping my fingers and toes tightly crossed that this lovely weather continues! I also thought this was the just perfect time to look back at our equally sunny engagement!
I honestly can’t believe that I can officially say this time next week I will be a married lady! The last nine months of planning and preparation have whizzed by in a daze of Pinterest boards, ring designing, dress fittings and never-ending list making! I can’t say that I’m going to miss the planning element (although it has certainly made me consider a career as a wedding planner – I’ve enjoyed the research, I’m just too indecisive!), it’ll be a strange feeling once all of the excitement is over. What on earth are we going to do with our free weekends?!
Anyway, with one week to go I thought I’d share our engagement story as I realised I had never really spoken about how The Canadian popped the big question! So, here goes…
As I mentioned in my previous wedding post Our First Date I was pretty sure that The Canadian was ‘The One’ straight away – thankfully he felt the same! After 3 months of dating (and a beautiful holiday to the picturesque Cinque Terre on the Italian coast) we decided to move in together. Flashforward to a year down the line and we were off to the USA and Canada for a road trip adventure holiday! The amazing national parks of Arizona had always been on my wish list and were headed to Canada so that I could meet his parents for the first time. I had a (hopeful) inkling that I may return to the UK a fiancée!
We had a few epic destinations planned along our route. Starting in Zion National Park we then made our way to Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon (shall I write a travel post about this trip perhaps? They are honestly breathtaking as you can see from the photos!). Afterwards we stopped off at Monument Valley before finishing up at The Grand Canyon and crossing the boarder to Canada.
Monument Valley was The Canadian’s destination of choice for popping the big question and I have to say – the boy done good! We had booked into The View Hotel (it lives up to it’s name!) in which all rooms have a fabulous balcony overlooking the world famous Mittens.
After a morning out exploring the national park and it’s awesome landscape we popped back to our room for a rest before lunch. Whilst I relaxed in the bedroom (read scrolled through Instagram) The Canadian was busy on the balcony setting up the most perfect photo opportunity. Little did I know he was actually about to begin secretly recording a video! After a few minutes he called me outside under the guise of posing for a “nice evening view shot from the balcony”. Dutifully I joined him and posed for the photo only for him to suddenly bend down on one knee and begin the most romantic speech I’ve ever heard. The Canadian told me how the last year we had been together was the best time of his life, how he couldn’t imagine the future without me by his side and how I would make him the happiest man in the world if I agreed to marry him – of course I said YES! He popped a silver band on my finger before telling me that we had an appointment in London with a jewellery designer on the day we returned from our holiday. Together we were going to create the perfect, unique ring. I squealed with excitement!
That afternoon we had a private four-wheel drive tour of Monument Valley and it felt amazing to be in such a spiritual place steeped in such history whilst making our very own romantic and unforgettable memories. It certainly was a showstopper of a destination to ask the most exciting question of all! Oh and the ring…it was everything I imagined and even more special because we chose every detail together.
It certainly made our holiday unforgettable and it was so lovely to be able to meet his parents and know that they were my future in-laws! Now I can’t wait to marry my thoughtful, inspiring and wonderful Canadian (and of course I’ll write a post all about the big day afterwards!).
How and where did you get engaged? What would be your dream proposal? Let me know in the comments!
