Who doesn’t love a little bit of luxury and pampering now and again?! With our busy lives it can be tricky to find some well earned ‘me-time‘ and just spend a couple of hours treating yourself to a relaxing and decadent afternoon. This is exactly what I experienced at Shy Mimosa Perfumery – a specialist fragrance boutique nestled in the heart of stylish Clifton Village in Bristol.
Specialising in niche and rare perfumes, Shy Mimosa works to exhibit and support independent perfumers and create a unique and sensual shopping experience. Upon arrival I was greeted by the lovely founder Maria whose passion and knowledge for artisan perfume was immediately both charming and infectious. Maria has a vision of showcasing a world of exclusive perfumes, challenging our traditional views of scents and inspiring her customers with the stories and history behind not only the fragrances but their creators.
I easily whiled away two hours in her company as I discovered the inspiration and craftsmanship behind each of the carefully selected brands housed within her chic and minimal styled boutique. Although many of the names were unfamiliar to me Maria carefully guided me on a world tour of perfume houses and creators, explaining the relevance behind not only the base and top notes of each perfume but also the memories and visuals that each scent is trying to evoke or create.
Some highlights from my personal shopping experience included discovering Marilyn Monroe’s favourite fragrance (actually not quite as sensual as I had imagined but sophisticated and ladylike all the same), and also the scent that JFK requested from a chance meeting with a French perfumer for his brother Bobby back in the 1930’s.
An appointment with Maria is not only an enlightenment and education on artisan perfume but also a luxurious, exclusive and personal shopping experience. It would be the perfect treat for yourself, a loved one or a way to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or wedding (Maria often helps brides-to-be find their perfect fragrance for their big day). I was very grateful to be gifted a divine Daniel Josier fragrance during my visit (it was so tricky to decide which scent I loved the most!) but I know each time I wear it the special memories of my shopping experience will come flooding back.
